Here are my top recommended dog foods, which are healthy, natural, organic and chemical free. This is not to say they are the only foods you should consider feeding your dogs. I’m just trying to be an advocate for better choices for our pets.

What is Organic?
Organic refers to environment-friendly farming methods using no artificial pesticides, fertilizers or chemicals to produce the purest and most natural foods possible.
Organic, earth-friendly farming practices promote the sustainable value of our natural resources and produce beneficial nourishing foods for our families and companion pets.
Choosing what to feed your dog has recently become more difficult due to the increase in more companies producing healthier, organic and chemical free foods for your pet. This is good news for all who want the best for their animals.
Homemade is my favorite high quality meal which I use, and have seen a dramatic difference in my two “girls”, Lady and Lola.
I also switch from homemade to “semi homemade” on days when time is short.
These are DEHYDRATED PRE-MIXES that are available and ready to be mixed with your own meat. All the veggies, grains, minerals, vitamins etc. are in the premix. It makes the perfect homemade meal for your dog, as you are not guessing on the extras such as how much calcium or minerals to add.
There are also alternatives, such as high grade premium natural dog food, which is also highly recommended because “premium, natural dog food” is made to stricter standards. Look for reputable companies that are smaller and have your dog’s interest first.
The most expensive choices are the better rated organic dog foods now available. The expense balances out over time as you will definitely see reduced visits to your vet. Dogs fed an organic diet are healthier, just as we are.
I’ve also used the canned dog food, which is much more palatable than the cheap commercial dog food brands, and actually doesn’t smell so bad either. The WELLNESS canned that I use as a meal supplement or flavouring ingredient list shows 95% human grade meat and water sufficient for processing. That’s it.
When buying canned look for the minimum ingredients. Avoid something that has a list of ingredients such as this.
Sub specialties are always available also, such as food for dogs with allergies, puppy food, overweight or obese dogs, and and our special seniors.
Making homemade also has special recipes and different needs for different sizes, ages and special needs and must be researched and understood completely before switching your dog to this type of food. Just throwing together meat and some leftovers is not what consists of a good homemade diet.

Below are all my animals and what I consider family members.
They are treated with respect, kindness and given the best that I am able to provide.

My two healthy Labrador Retrievers. Lady my Black Lab was born in 1997 and saved from someone who did not want her. Lola was Dec. 31, 2005 and we adopted her from a nice clean reputable breeder when she was around 8 week old, in February, 2006. |
Sitting pretty, waiting for treats. These two keep the house happy and busy. Since there are no “real kids” left at home, Lady and Lola are now our designated children. All you dog lovers out there know what I’m talking about! |

Buddy, the tough guy I saved from freezing to death in Feb. 07. He has the good life now! Buddy is the only male animal member in this household (so far) , but he is really cool to hang out with. Everybody comments on how laid back he is. |
Zena – another cat I rescued the same year we got Lola – they grew up together. Lola and Zena are most like sisters of all the animals here. They romp and play together and sleep together also. So Sweet. |
This is a little girl named Jinx, who showed up last summer (2008), and I swear she was not long for this world. I really have never seen anything so emaciated and am still amazed that she was still able to walk. She’s been fixed, and now is getting fat. She wants to eat all the time, and I believe she remembers her starving days. She has adjusted well to the house and loves sleeping with me and gets lots of attention. |
Last but never forgotten, my sweet, sweet little beagle girl, Sue. She was 10 years old when she died, and had multiple diseases.
Cancer is what ultimately killed her, but she also had a thyroid that didn’t work, and was on thyroid pills her whole life. She also had mild epilepsy and seizures.
I saved her from a horrible puppy mill, at the age of six months, and she was the most heartbreaking picture of neglect I have to this day ever seen.
She had a good life with me here, and was treated like a little princess.
Because of Susie’s multiple diseases and illnesses and her untimely death, and the pet food contamination and recall all happening within the same year, I began reading and ultimately advocating feeding healthy natural homemade or organic dog food.
I truly believe Susie would have lived to her full potential of an additional 5 to 8 years if I hadn’t fed her the crappy, low grade commercial dog food that I thought was good for her.
I didn’t have the knowledge yet of what I was really serving to Susie, and as with most others believed that I was making the best choice available.
SO NOW I MOVE FORWARD AND TRY AND SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT HEALTHY NATURAL HOMEMADE OR ORGANIC DOG FOOD. I ABSOLUTELY BELIEVE THIS WILL INCREASE THE LIFESPAN AND HEALTH OF MY ANIMALS, ALONG WITH ALL OF YOU WHO SWITCH OVER TO A PROPER NUTRITIOUS CANINE DIET FOR YOUR COMPANION. R.I.P MY SWEET SWEET SUE.

Eaglepack looks like a good healthy food for your Mastiffs. Lucky them, having such a loving conscientious owner. This food is far and above any of the cheap grocery store brands. Thank you for visiting and also for investigating until finding a good dog food. As you know, eliminating chemicals, preservatives and uneccesary additives will give your dogs a healthier, longer life. I wouldn’t hesitate to feed this to my two girls, and I’m pretty fussy about what they eat. You have 2 lucky pups.
HERE AND HERE are my favourite top 10 organic dog foods.

I used the grading system you posted to try to determine where Eagle Pack Holistic Select Large & Giant Breed Adult Formula scores. We have 2 young English Mastiffs and did a lot of researching when deciding what we wanted to feed them. I’m not familiar with all the terminology, but it seems the this food scores pretty well using your scale.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
KL
